Chandigarh, May 22 : The Shiromani Akali Dal today asked the PPCC leadership to stop "midsummer ravings' against the people's mandate in the just concluded the Zila Parishad and Block Samiti polls in the state and to learn to have faith in the democratic system of the country.
"The statements of the Congress leaders in the wake of their decimation in the people's court amount to nothing throwing insults at the poll verdict. They are acting as if they had lost their mind in sheer frustration, unable to bear the massive rout. We understand their blind anger but they should limit this to issuing statements against us. We don't mind. But they absolutely must stop casting aspersions on the people's wisdom and must respect the verdict they have delivered, " said the senior Akali leader and Secretary General of the SAD, Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa in a statement released through the party office here this afternoon.
" Accepting the people's mandate and owning up to one's mistakes is the basic tenet in any democratic system and every political party having faith in democracy must respect this principle," said the Akali leader.
Dhindsa said that the statements of the Congress leaders, especially the PPCC president Partap Singh Bajwa revealed a sinister and dictatorial mindset. "But this, he said, was nothing unusual as the Congress had never shown faith in true democratic practices and has this habit of treating the people's verdict with contempt and ridicule . "Can they show me even a single instance when they have bowed to the people's mandate with humility and respect? When ever they find themselves on the losing side, they start indulging in abusive language.
Dhindsa said that by issuing baseless statements against the state government after the results of the Zila Parishad polls the state Congress leadership was insulting the verdict of the people.
The Akali leader said that the ballot has always triumphed in the state and the wise voters of Punjab have always upheld the democratic values despite of all odds. However he said that the strange reaction of the Congress leadership after the landslide victory of the SAD-BJP alliance in the Zila Parishad Polls reflected their utter lack of faith in the democratic process.
Thanking the people of Punjab for the sweeping mandate in the favor of SAD-BJP alliance, the SAD Secretary General said that the agenda of peace , communal harmony and development set by the Chief Minister Sardar Parkash Singh Badal and the SAD president Sardar Sukhbir Singh Badal had received massive and whole hearted endorsement from the people .
The alliance government would make all out efforts for carrying forward the process of all-round development of the state, especially the countryside. . Dhindsa said that these results should not be merely read as a victory in Zila Parishad elections but in fact it was a referendum for the forthcoming general elections in 2014.
The verdict of Zila Parishad polls was a testimony that the people would show door to the Congress and its allies in the coming Lok Sabha polls. "The days of the UPA are numbered as the people have now made up their mind to constitute NDA government at the centre" he added.
