Kapurthala-- Heavy inflow of water in Pong dam and Chakki Khadd (water stream) led to flooding in the agricultural land of around two dozen villages in two districts of Doaba region.
The entire civil administration and drainage department remained on toes in Kapurthala, and Dasuya and Mukerain subdivisions of the Hoshiarpur district. Around 35 persons were also evacuated from low lying areas of Mehtabpur village to safe places. Fields of over a half dozen villages of Hoshiarpur district and over a dozen villages in Kapurthala district got submerged under water from Beas river, owing to release of around 1.35 lakh cusecs water in the river in the past 24 hours.
These areas are mostly those which have no Dhussi bandh between the villages and Beas river. In Dasuya also agricultural land of villages like Mewa Miani, Kawanwali, Rara Tahli, Abdullapur submerged in water. Drainage department officials, however, said that till now there has been no loss of life or property.
Sources in the Pong dam in Talwara informed that the dam received 3.81 lakh cusecs water in just one night. There was heavy rain in the catchment area of the dam in Himachal Pradesh, which led to the heavy inflow into dam and forced the authorities to outflow around 60,000 cusecs water into Beas river.
