October 20, 2014 08:29 PM

Continuing with its ‘Green Diwali Campaign’
today volunteers of Yuvsatta & Department of Environment, Chandigarh
Administration reached Government Model Sr. Sec. School, Sector 33C,
Chandigarh and addressed the students in the morning assembly of the
School.

Addressing the gathering of young students Pramod Sharma, Coordinator
of Yuvsatta shared that it’s a known fact that the cracker units in
Sivakasi are notorious for employing children whose nimble hands and
low pay made them sought after workforce by the employers. And we
should burst our egos rather than crackers this Diwali. He further
added that purchase of crackers not only will increase pollution and
garbage around but also Child Labour. And specially when an Indian
Kailash Satarthi’s struggle against child labour got recognized at
highest international level and he is declared a winner of Noble Peace
Prize, so we should all vow to not use any product associated with
child labour in our country.

Dr. BS Makkar, Medical Director of Yuvsatta addressing the students
said that “for most children lighting of firecrackers is the highlight
of Diwali. Brighter the sparkles, louder the noise the greater the
thrill!! But little do people realize that in our increasingly
populated and polluted cities, the temporary joy of watching the
firecrackers is soon replaced by the intense air pollution caused by
these. The toxic substances used in the firecrackers release toxic
gases that are harmful to the health of all living beings. The high
level of noise generated by the crackers cause immense suffering to
birds and animals. Besides, Diwali crackers are dreaded by the sick
and the ailing.”

Parent Members of School Management Committee also addressed the
students on the occasion. Later Indira Beniwal, Principal of the
School administered a Pledge of ‘Say NO to Crackers’ to over 2000
students of the School.
