SYNOPSIS:‘Mary Kom’ is the story of a boxer Mary Kom (Priyanka Chopra). She is the daughter of a poor farmer, who has been a wrestler in his life, Mary desires of becoming a boxer and goes against her father’s wish to train under Narjit Singh (Sunil Thapa). He trains her very well and Mary Kom becomes one of the best boxers of India. But, then she gets married and takes a turn to her family life. However, after few years, the mother of two decides to be back in the boxing field. Will she be successful to make a good comeback? How she will manage to make a mark with the comeback? This is the rest of the story.

STORY, SCREENPLAY AND DIALOGUES:
Writer Saiwin Quadras comes up with the story based on the real life of world champion boxer Mary Kom, since it’s based on a true story so there’s nothing much the writer offers and the narrative is very much predictable throughout, with not much twists and turns in this tale. But, there was indeed much scope in the scenario to portray this magnificent saga. Screenplay is not that effective and lacks emotions, drama and love in the narration. There are few scenes which do motivate you and engross you in the film and the writer could have come up with more such scenes. Second half of the film lacks the energy and enthusiasm which was required in the drama and even the climax could have been more dramatic and power pack with Mary winning the world championship. Dialogues are just okay and could have been more hard hitting to get the desired whistles and claps.

PERFORMANCES:
Mary Kom relies entirely on the shoulders of Priyanka Chopra who is magnificent and splendid with her performance. She fits into the character of Mary Kom and justifies it completely, be it a angry youngster, a passionate persona to become a boxer, with lots of hardships becoming a world champion or a mother of two trying to make her comeback in the boxing world, she has performed in all the parts brilliantly. Sunil Thapa as Mary’s coach and Darshan Kumar as Mary’s husband are fine. Rest of the cast are okay.

DIRECTION, CINEMATOGRAPHY AND EDITING:Director Omung Kumar has been a successful art director, but he fails to create the desired impact in his debut film ‘Mary Kom’ which had lots of scope by giving tribute to the legendary boxing champion Mary Kom. The narrative is very predictable and too straight, rather it required lots of drama, energy, twists and turns. The maker has taken too much of cinematic liberties to prove his tale on celluloid. Few sequences have been impactful in depicting Mary’s struggle and create sympathy for the character, but more hard hitting sequences were required in the narrative. Omung has been successful in taking out the good performances from his leads and the film do inspires you with Mary’s accomplishment for our country ‘INDIA’. Cinematography is fine and editing by Rajesh Pandey could have been more sharp and crisp.

ACTION, BACKGROUND SCORE AND MUSIC:Action by Parvez Sheikh and Bob Miller in the film is good and boxing matches are shown really well. The background score is fine and the music given by Shashi-Shivamm is good and goes well with the theme of the film.

CHOREOGRAPHY, LOCATIONS AND PRODUCTION VALUE:There is hardly any scope of choreography in the film. Locations are mind-blowing and the production value is of high standard.

OUR VERDICT: If you love Priyanka Chopra and sports film, then you should go to watch it and get inspired by wonderful performance of Priyanka, otherwise the film is very predictable and not a complete entertainer.
