Suraiyya was the first singer in Bollywood whose acting calibre matched her singing skills. And now the era of multi-tasking actors is back again. We would dismiss anyone who comes with an old school of thought that actors are only meant to perform with their bodies. Nowadays, actors are foraying into different arenas like music, writing etc. and have found success therein. When we heard Shraddha Kapoor singing her version of Galliyan for Ek Villain, we were spell-bound. Her soulful melody made us look back in time when actors doubled as singers and were fairly decent at the same. We take a look at the Bollywood divas of now who are creating ripples not just with their acting talent, but with their musical prowess as well:

Alia Bhatt:

There were no doubts left about her acting skills after she stunned the viewers with her powerful performance. But when she was taken under the wings of the Oscar winning music maestro AR Rahman to sing for Highway she proved that she can charter the musical territory equally smoothly. After listening to Sooha Saha we can’t help but look forward to this pretty babe take up more singing projects!

Shraddha Kapoor:

The actor amazed us with her unplugged version of Galliyan from Ek Villain and we were surprised with how we had never heard her crooning before professionally. Her voice has a quality that can make hearts melt and her acting talent has already been proven in Aashiqui 2. This demure dame is a complete package to look out for.

Parineeti Chopra:

Although the Ishaqzaade actor has never sang for an album we are given to believe that she is a trained singer! She is giving serious competition to her contemporaries acting-wise, wonder what’ll happen once she decides to take up a singing offer. Will she beat her singer-actor cousin Priyanka Chopra at that game, one can only wait to find out!

Priyanka Chopra:

Unlike her sister Tisha, Mimi aka Piggy Chops is not a trained singer. But that didn’t stop her from rocking the music charts with hits like Exotic and I Can’t Make You Love Me. She is one singer-actor to look out for as there is no stopping PeeCee given her extraordinary acting talent (we can’t get over her Barfi performance) and her splendid singing skills! She is Pitbull’s favourite already and she has a long and prosperous singing career in Hollywood in front of her.

Shruti Hassan:

We weren’t exactly planning on putting this Southern sultry actor’s name down in the list here because she turned into an actor after having sang for a couple of projects. Her Bollywood singing debut was in her father’s film Chachi 420. Nonetheless, her singing talent is giving a tough competition to her contemporaries up North. And we hardly need to mention that her killer looks can put several other B-Town beauties to shame.

Actors turning into singers isn’t a novel trend in the industry. Madhuri Dixit-Nene, Sridevi and Juhi Chawla have crooned for their films in the past and their attempts have been recognised as well.
