Ottawa, November 11, 2013 —

The Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister for Multiculturalism, issued the following statement to recognize Polish Independence Day:

“As Canadians reflect this Remembrance Day on those who made sacrifices – and who continue to serve our country – for our freedom, Polish Canadians will commemorate Polish Independence Day, the most important Polish national holiday.

“In addition to our own proud military history, I encourage all Canadians to learn more about the risks and sacrifices borne by our Polish allies – in particular the Home Army – in the fight for freedom.

“On November 11, 1918, after 123 years of captivity, the Polish state was reborn and regained its independence. After partitions done by Austria, Prussia and Russia, national uprisings, struggles and efforts in various fields, Poles, owing to their steadfastness, patriotism and heroism, managed to win back their freedom and rightful sovereignty, as well as re-establish itself as an important European democracy.

“For people of Polish descent, today is an important celebration of their heritage and their long standing commitment to democratic values.

“Here in Canada, where diversity is not only respected but warmly welcomed, we are tremendously proud of the contributions of Polish Canadians that have enriched lives of many people with their culture, values and skills.

“As Minister for Multiculturalism, I extend my best wishes for a happy National Independence Day to all Canadians of Polish descent.”
