New Delhi, Oct 1

On the eve of Mahatma Gandhi's 144th birth anniversary, hundreds of people across the country would spend a night under the stars with the homeless in their respective cities, an NGO said Tuesday.

The campaign - Aman Biradri and Joy of Giving Week - organised by ActionAid India, will take place in 27 states apart from Delhi. The aim is to spread awareness about the hardships faced by the homeless.

"On the night of Oct 1, hundreds of individuals will spend a night with the homeless in their city and experience life on the street and in the homeless shelters expressing their solidarity with the homeless in their demand for a dignified life," said a statement by ActionAid India.

"The pledges and a petition signed by all the participants and the homeless will be presented to the local governments of all the states," it added.

In the capital, the sleep outs will take place at Hanuman Mandir in central Delhi, Liberty cinema hall in north Delhi, Yamuna Pushta and Geeta Colony in east Delhi, Jama Masjid in the old quarters of the city and Tilak Nagar metro station in west Delhi.
