Hockey: Easy win for Army XI

Chennai: Army XI, who lost 1-3 to Indian Overseas Bank in their opening game, recovered well to thrash CAG 10-1 in the 88th All-India MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup hockey tournament here Saturday.

Starring in Army XI's runaway victory were Euazer Lakra, Chandan Aind and Ignace Tirkey who scored two goals each, while Binoy Bhengra, Mukesh Lakra, Arun Kumar and Sraju A.P. knocked in one apiece.

For CAG, S.S. Bundelha scored the consolation goal with a 51st minute strike.

Earlier, Punjab National Bank overcame SAIL, Rourkela 3-1 with goals by Hardeep Singh (5th), Ajitesh Roy (46th) and Arjun (60th) while Rajin Kandulna (26th) replied for the vanquished.

Bharat Petroleum posted their second win by thrashing Indian Bank 7-3 with a second-half blitz as Hariprasad scored twice (45th, 60th) while Tushar Khandkar (3rd), Pundalik Bellary (7th) and Jarnail Singh (32nd) added to the tally.

Indian Bank's response came from V. Raja (16th, 69th) and Gnanavel G. (24th), but faded away when Bharat Petroleum took control with timely goals.
