Saskatoon: Inmates in a project at the Saskatoon Correctional Centre are offering again to the neighborhood.

On top of helping clean up the city, the Saskatoon Correctional Centre's Urban Camp gave something like 20,000 lbs of produce from its fall collect to the Saskatoon Food Bank and St. Mary's Community School on Tuesday.

They've been around Saskatoon this mid year doing the messy work like cutting grass and grabbing litter.

Giles Saulnier, Saskatoon Correctional Centre Urban Camp Deputy Director, said, “It gives them a feeling of pride. It gives them a feeling of offering once again to the neighborhood that they have taken from, So each morning they have a reason in getting up going and doing group work.”

Urban Camp gives prisoners at the correctional focus the chance to move go into social order.

The system's drive with the city has been progressing for three years.

Saulnier said, “I saw a project when I came into the system that had a normal tally of pretty nearly 30 guilty parties and at this moment throughout the previous five years, we've been having a normal of 50 guilty parties on any given day.”

When detainees are given the green light to enter the system, they need to experience a screening process.

The detainee's diligent work and affect on the city hasn't gone unnoticed. The Provincial Minister of Corrections sees it spreading to different urban areas in Saskatchewan.

Christine Tell, Saskatchewan adjustments clergyman, said, “It is such a win-win and its a positive for the group and positive for the convicts and why wouldn't we.”

Urban camp serves a 100 kilometer sweep around Saskatoon.

The interest is so high, group orgs are booking the crews for the next year.
