Agra, Sep 5

A 20-year-old woman was Thursday in a serious condition after being attacked with acid by her jilted lover, police said.

After spending nearly two hours in the district hospital without being attended to, she was referred to a private nursing home where doctors said she was in a serious state.

The woman is the eldest of seven sisters and two brothers. Her mother works in a factory while her father sells herbal medicines on a footpath.

Police said she was engaged to a young man but they did not marry. The infuriated man, Ishtiaq, early Thursday threw acid on her face while she was asleep on her terrace.

Her father had gone to Gorakhpur to fix up her marriage with a man working in Saudi Arabia. Police said the attacker was absconding.
