Calgary: Pedestrian killed in crash

May 08, 2013 10:50 PM

Calgary police are pleading with the public to pay more attention after a young man was struck and killed by a concrete truck on Tuesday evening. It is believed that the 22-year-old man was wearing headphones while crossing the street and didn't see the large vehicle coming toward him. Police were called to the community of Inglewood just before 4:50 p.m. for reports of a serious crash on 12 Street, just south of 9 Avenue S.E. Investigators say the concrete truck was travelling northbound on 12 Street and hit the man as he crossed the intersection in an unmarked crosswalk.

Police say that it appears the victim was distracted as he stepped into traffic. "It appears so far from our investigation that the male was distracted by a set of headphones and as he entered the intersection he failed to yield to an oncoming concrete truck that was fully loaded," said CPS Constable Kevin Green from the Calgary Police Traffic Unit. The man was dragged under the truck and EMS rushed him to Foothills Medical Centre with serious injuries. He died from those injuries a short time later. Police are reminding people to take extreme care when walking on city streets with headphones on. “You need to be aware of your surroundings at all times of what’s happening. Just turn the music down if you do need to listen to music when you are walking but most of all if you come to an intersection, you stop and you should be looking at all times,” said Cst. Green Police say they do not believe alcohol and speed are factors in the crash and no charges are expected.
