New Delhi, Aug 3 (IANS) Congress president Sonia Gandhi has asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to ensure fair treatment for IAS officer Durga Shakti Nagpal who has been suspended by the Uttar Pradesh government, party source said Saturday.

"We must ensure that she is treated fairly," Gandhi wrote in her letter to the prime minister, suggesting it be ensured the officer was not unduly harassed by the state government.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhiklesh Yadav had justified her, suspension saying it was done to prevent communal disturbances. The state government said that Nagpal, who had taken on the sand mafia in Gautam Budh Nagar, was suspended for allegedly demolishing an illegal wall around a mosque in the same area.
