Mumbai, July 24: A sessions court in Mumbai is expected to frame charges against actor Salman Khan in a 2002 hit-and-run case today.

Earlier, a magistrate's court had ruled that the actor will face a fresh trial under the more serious charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. If found guilty, he could face upto 10 years in jail.

So far, the actor has been tried for a lesser offence of causing death by rash and negligent driving the maximum punishment for which is only two years in jail. But prosecutors filed an application for the charges to be upgraded, which the court upheld in June. Eleven years ago in September 2002, Mr Khan was allegedly driving a Toyota Land Cruiser when he ran over a group of people sleeping on the pavement outside a bakery in suburban Bandra. One person was killed and four others were injured in the accident.

In 1998, he spent three days in prison for killing the endangered black-buck deer in Rajasthan.
