CALGARY, July 19: Investigators have charged five men connected to the FOB gang with three gang-related homicides that killed six people.
The arrests centre on three killings in 2008 and 2009, at the height of the conflict between FOB and the rival FOB Killers.
Police said the investigation — dubbed Operation Desino (Latin for “desist”) began in January 2012.
The first killing claimed the life of Kevin Anaya, who was shot outside a home on Marcombe Drive N.E. on Aug. 9, 2008.
Police have charged Nicholas Cypui Chan, 35, with first degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder and instructing a criminal investigation.
His brother, Timothy Matthew Chan, 32, is charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. He is at large but is believed to have connections to Edmonton, Vancouver and Toronto.
Nathan Lawrence Zuccherato, 26, has been charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
Zuccherato is currently serving a life sentence for three counts of first-degree for his role in a triple homicide at the Bolsa Restaurant on Jan. 1, 2009.
Dustin Duke Darby, 30, has been charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
Darby is serving a federal prison sentence for cocaine trafficking.
The second case involves the shooting of Kevin Ses and Tina Kong, two friends who were eating at the Food In East on Marlborough Drive N.E. on Oct. 26, 2008.
Ses was associated with an FK gang member but Kong had no connections to criminal activity. The shots seriously wounded two others in the restaurant.
Zuccherato is charged with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder.
Van Thoai Luc, 25, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder.
The third part of the investigation involves the Bolsa massacre on Jan. 1, 2009, which killed FK gang member Sanjeev Mann, Aaron Bendle, a friend of Mann’s and cocaine dealer, and restaurant patron Keni Su’a, a bystander shot when he ran from the restaurant.
Zuccherato, Michael Roberto and Real Christian Honorio have all been convicted of first-degree murder for their role in the crime — although the cases are under appeal.
Operation Desino has now resulted in first-degree murder charges against Nicholas Chan and Darby.
The ongoing conflict between FOB and FK has been responsible for at least 25 homicides in the Calgary area since 2002.
