Why mosquitoes love biting beer drinkers

July 18, 2013 10:43 AM

A study has found that drinking just a single 12-ounce bottle of beer can make a person more attractive to insects.

Researchers have had suspected that this phenomenon happened, as drinking raises the secretion of ethanol in sweat, or because it increases body temperature, however, none of these factors correlated with mosquito landings, making their affinity for drinkers a 'mystery,' theWashington Times reported.

They also said many other factors - from blood type, metabolism and pregnancy status to the levels of exercise you do and carbon dioxide you emit - play roles.

According to Smithsonian Magazinemosquitoes, for instance, are capable of smelling lactic acid and other substances in sweat, and go for the higher temperature bodies.

The insects also have an affinity for Type O blood twice as much as Type A and are also attracted to high levels of carbon dioxide and are capable of smelling the gas from 164 feet away.
