Flood-delayed Conservative convention coming to Calgary this fall

Calgary, July 14: The federal Conservative convention that was washed out of Calgary by southern Alberta’s massive floods has been rescheduled for the city this fall.

Party president Joan Walsh announced Friday on the Conservative’s website that the national convention will take place from Oct. 31 to Nov. 2 at the BMO Centre in Stampede Park.

It had originally been set for June 27 to 29 but flooding that began a week earlier had forced its postponement.

“This decision reaffirms our commitment to Calgary,” said Walsh in a statement.

“We have been working closely with the authorities and local businesses in Calgary to find the adequate space, despite the understandable difficulties with such a short time frame.”

The convention had been seen as an opportunity for Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his government to turn the page after a spring filled with controversies over Senate expenses and caucus unrest.

Harper is expected to shuffle his cabinet next week.
