Anurag Kashyap, Vikramaditya Motwane, Vikas Bahl and others have produced a gem-of-a-film with Harshavardhan Kulkarni’s direction. Read on the full movie review to find out why I say so…
You really don’t know what to expect when you are going to watch a film like Hunterrr. On one hand it has been made by one of the finest production houses in India, Phantom, and on the other you have a very low budget film with low key promotions and no big stars. So with a mixed bag of feelings I entered the theater. Just like me most of the other reporters were seen chit chatting with their neighbours asking as to what this film would be about. No one had the correct answer and that factor made everyone stay glued to the seats from the very first shot.
Trust me, I would be lying if I said people were not glued to their seats till the end. Everyone was seen watching the film with utmost attention and laughing, crying, remembering their own history and gasping at the twists and turns. People hardly checked their vibrating cell phones, and that was the impact of Hunterrr.
I personally hadn’t laughed this much in a long long time. I laughed, I imagined myself in the shoes of the lead character, I had tears in my eyes when he did, I sympathised with him, I wanted to dare like him; in short I could feel every bit of the film in me. And the same goes with all the men watching the film. If you were a least bit worried that women might not laugh at the film’s jokes, you are wrong. They laughed equally because the film never showed anything to demean women.
When I met Gulshan for the an interview he had said, “This is not a sex comedy; it’s a comedy about a guy who loves to have sex” and the film lives up to this tagline.
What’s it about
The film revolves around an unassuming sex addict and his lustful journey. The sex addict is played by Gulshan Devaiah, who portrays the character of Mandar Ponkshe aka Vaasu. The film revolves around his sexual escapades and how he manages to make women (Veera Saxena, Sai Tamhankar, Radhika Apte) fall for him. Also the three ladies in the film are not just the hapless preys of the Vaasu. They are shikaris in their own right. Amidst all this, lies the story of Hunterrr.
What’s hot
The famous dialogue ismein drama hai, comedy hai, romance hai, tragedy hai, suspense hai, and so on suits aptly for this film. There is subtle and underlying comedy, drama, romance, tragedy, mystery, suspense and even a bit of action when required. That’s the USP of the film. It’s a complete entertainer.
The performances by Gulshan Devaiah was superb. The nuances that he brought to the character of Mandar Ponkshe, was as brilliant as Kangana Ranaut’s in Queen. In short, Gulshan is the Amol Palekar in the film, and he is as good as Amol was in his heydays. The leading ladies have done their job perfectly. Sai Tamhankar is HOT in every sense of the word and she lives upto that tag in every frame of the film (whenever she is present). Radhika Apte’s character is strong from the outside but very soft from the inside and she portrays that very brilliantly. Veera Saxena is the dumb, confused, teenager who wants to fall in love for the first time. Her appearance, get-up and acting are so nuanced that you start relating her character to girls you might have met at some point in your life. Music by Khamosh Shah is top-notch. All songs are worthy to be there on your music players. They are varied in genre yet very very entertaining. The narrative screenplay has amalgamated all these songs fantastically in the film and therefore you don’t feel the urge to check your cell phone during the songs.
Prajwal Joshi’s screenplay and Harshavardhan Kulkarni’s direction are the reason why Indian films are still loved by the classes. The way they have shown a simple story and yet made it entertaining is praiseworthy. They have shown that you always don’t need big budgets and huge show offs to make your movies work. A movie with a good story, a worthy script and a audience-friendly screenplay can also work wonders. The comedy is so inherent in the screenplay that every dialogue will make you guffaw.
What’s not
To be honest, there is nothing bad in this film. The only thing that I can still say is that some girls (say ladies) may not understand a few jokes and thereby feel it absurd. Apart from that there isn’t anything else that wasn’t good in the film. I am pretty sure, guys and girls would have very different reviews after watching this film. That may be a bad thing for the film’s prospects at the box office.
What to do
LEAVE EVERYTHING AND GO WATCH THIS FILM. Bollywood hardly has such comedies and this one is definitely going in history as one of the bests. A MUST WATCH!
