Abuja:

At least 16 people were killed in a bomb attack in Nigerian city of Maiduguri on Saturday, media reports said.

According to reports, the suicide bomber, who triggerred the blast, was a 10-year-old girl. No group has so far claimed responsibility for Saturdays attack, BBC reported.

The extent of damage was still being ascertained and rescue efforts still going on at the place of the explosion, Jibrin said. He said official casualty figure will be given after ongoing rescue operation.

"Security operatives have cordoned off the area," the police spokesman added.

An eyewitness account revealed that the attack was carried out by a girl whose body was completely shattered by the bomb. The upper part of her body, the eyewitness noted, was flung apart due to the high caliber explosive on her.

Other sources however said at least 20 bodies had been found in the area. Local people blamed Boko Haram for the attack.
