A new league, another experimentation for Indian tennis - the Indian Premier Tennis League (IPTL), a dream project of multiple Grand Slam champion Mahesh Bhupathi, will kick-off Friday.
After a warm response to the Champions Tennis League that concluded recently, expectations will only be higher from IPTL. And IPTL for its part has promised 'tennis as you've never seen before', featuring many all-time favourite players.
Excerpts from the telephonic interview:
The League season is on for Indian Tennis. The Champions Tennis League has already received a good response, but we are all waiting for the big one - the Indian Premier Tennis League. How prepared are we for this dream tennis league?
I am at the airport, as we speak and I am pretty excited. I think it is something really different. The leagues are something that has been working in every field of sports and it was only about time when it was going to come in tennis. I am looking forward to it. It must be a lot of fun.
Does the format have the necessary ingredients to make it an exciting package for the Indian audience?
I do think it does. It will be short and quick. I think it's going to be a lot of fun with all formats of the game - singles, doubles, mixed and we will get to see the legends as well which is going to very exciting.
Though it's a star-studded line-up in all four teams (Manila Mavericks, Singapore Slammers, UAE Royals and Indian Aces), you're part of the Indian Aces which has an amazing mix. Will the Indian Aces be the team to beat this tournament?
I am really excited. We have a great team especially with Roger (Federer) in it. It's great to have Roger and Pete (Sampras) on one team. I feel privileged to be part of the team.
Are the rumours about you playing singles in IPTL true?
(Laughs) If I need to, yes I can as such. No, that's not something (I am looking at). If I do need to, yes I can definitely play a set. I have beem practicing a little bit. Let's see if the team needs me, then I will play.
