Statement by General Lawson marking Remembrance Day

November 12, 2014 02:47 PM

On November 11th Canadians across the nation will mark with solemn remembrance the sacrifice of Canadian Armed Forces members who have served Canada with honour and distinction.

“We will reflect on the legacy of their achievements through the First World War and the Second, through the Korean conflict, and throughout the years of the Cold War, and more recent conflicts. In this, the year in which our military mission in Afghanistan ended, we will also look back on the achievements of our 40,000 members who deployed, and contributed to the possibility of a brighter future for Afghans.

“We will think of all those who have served abroad, and also those who have served here at home; those who have helped to guard our shores, and those who have responded when natural disasters have struck to assist Canadians in distress, and those who have trained to be ready when their nation called, like Private Allen who we lost last week.

“This year is particularly poignant for us as we also think of our two brothers in arms recently lost in attacks here in Canada for no other reason than that they were wearing their uniform. Our uniform. As we gather on the 11th at the National War Memorial in Ottawa, and at Cenotaphs and cemeteries across the country, we will remember Warrant Officer Vincent and Corporal Cirillo, and their service and sacrifice. We will honour these fallen colleagues by naming operating bases in Iraq and Kuwait after them, and we will continue our operations undeterred.

“Through the efforts of all those who served before us we live in a safer world, our children have a brighter future, and we are stronger as a nation. Today, we carry on their legacy with humility and pride, and we honour their memory by serving with courage and dedication. We will remember them.”

Chief of the Defence Staff
