SYNOPSIS:

The film kicks off with the superstar Akshay Kumar playing himself and romancing with Michelle who has a special appearance in the song ‘Meherbani’. ‘The Shaukeens’ is a remake of the 1982 comedy film ‘Shaukeen’. The story of the film revolves around the lives of three middle aged men who are given the title of ‘The Shaukeens’. All the three men have retired from their work and are seeking for some adventure to revitalize their sexual life. Pinky (Piyush Mishra) is a widower, KD (Annu Kapoor) is unmarried and Lali (Anupam Kher) never had a good sexual life as his wife has turned herself completely into religious activities. They are so tired with their slow, boring and unexciting lives where they lived in Delhi. They couldn’t find anything exciting and pleasurable in Delhi, hence they decide to fly off to Mauritius to find love. When they reach Mauritius, they come across a hot designer Ahana (Lisa Haydon) to whom they met on the beach and she offered them to stay at her place. All those three old men craved for, was to sleep with Ahana, whereas all she wanted was to meet Akshay Kumar, who is an alcoholic and a superstar. She is a diehard fan of Akshay Kumar. Will the three men succeed to get what they wanted, for which they even landed up at Mauritius? On the other hand, will Ahana be ever able to meet Akshay Kumar? All this forms the rest of the story…..

STORY, SCREENPLAY AND DIALOGUES:

The film is conceptualized on the contemporary lifestyle which is derived from the 1982’s classic comedy entertainer ‘Shaukeen’. The story of the film is very well envisioned and the screenplay by Tigamanshu Dhulia is very well done but except for the start of the second half, where it wasn’t much as it was in the first half. Director Abhishek Sharma was wise enough to maintain a good casting for the film. The dialogues by Tigamanshu are pretty well versed with a lot of humor and they will set the trigger off, which will just keep you laughing. The first was not very appealing; however Akshay’s entry in the first half just before the interval was quite a relieving factor. The worst part is to keep expectations, and the second half proved that very well. Just as you would start hoping that the movie would get better in the second half, it proves the complete opposite and turns out to be even boring. The film starts falling off flat in the humor quotient as well.

PERFORMANCES:

Akshay Kumar playing himself in his extended appearance was much needed. He pulled off the entire plot with ease as he was the one to make many giggle which was much needed as there already was too much of laughter. Lisa looked gorgeous in the film, whereas her performance was just good. Annu Kapoor played his part exceptionally been given a well deserved role of a flirtatious nature. Anupam Kher was also very hilarious and kept the audience alive with his naughtiness. Piyush Mishra was also good but somehow it appeared as if he was a little restricted, perhaps that was because of his innocent character. The special appearances of Dimple Kapadia, Manoj Joshi, Abhishek Bachchan, Suneil Shetty and Kareena Kapoor are hilarious but they last long on the screen.

DIRECTION, CINEMATOGRAPHY AND EDITING:

With the concept of the film being so wonderful and the star-cast so top-class, it would be difficult for one and all to believe that film did turn out to be boring at many sequences, all thanks to the director Abhishek Sharma. Cinematography by Chaudhary Amalendu is fair enough, whereas the editor Rameshwar Bhagat has done an excellent job.

ACTION, BACKGROUND SCORE AND MUSIC:

There is no scope for action in the movie, as it is a completely filled with drama and comedy. The background score by Ssandeep Chowta of the film is pretty decent as it does not have pretty much to offer. The music is directed by Yo Yo Honey Singh, Vikram Nagi, Arko Mukherjee and Hard Kaur and they all seem to have done a back tapping job. ‘Meherbani’ is the song which is the best amongst all the song tracks of the film. Another one which is quite nicely done is ‘Ishq Kutta Hai’.

CHOREOGRAPHY, LOCATIONS AND PRODUCTION VALUE:

Choreographers Ahmed Khan, Adil Shaikh and Ganesh Acharya did their bit fairly especially in the song ‘Ishq Kutta Hai’. The locations of Mauritius were really exotic and beautiful. They were very well visualized and even showcased.

OUR VERDICT:

The film could’ve been way much better acquiring such a talented star cast and also having such a remarkable story. Somehow, Abhishek miserably failed this time. Having said this, both the story and the star cast were ruined for nothing. Moreover, a little hard work would’ve done wonders. As a whole, the movie is okay, however, it could’ve been much better.
