Ottawa—
The Honourable Jason Kenney issued the following statement to recognize the Moon Festival:
“Tonight’s full moon will be admired at Moon Festival celebrations across the country.
“This tradition for Canadians of Chinese, Vietnamese and Korean descent is believed to have been first celebrated as early as the 10th century BCE. Also known as the Mid-Autumn Festival, it is associated with fertility, rejuvenation and fecundity. Prayers were given for babies, bountiful harvests and fruitful livestock.
“Today, it is celebrated as a gathering for friends and family to give thanks for the year’s harvest. Those celebrating today will likely mark the occasion outdoors under the full moonlight, and will honour traditions such as eating mooncakes and sharing legendary stories.
“As Minister for Multiculturalism, I encourage Canadians of all backgrounds to enjoy the festivities planned in their communities this evening. I wish everyone celebrating a joyful Moon Festival.”
