Quebec, 25 August 2014 —

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) will be participating in Operation Nanook 2014 from 25-29 August 2014.

This is an annual exercise organized in Northern Canada by the Canadian Forces. This year’s exercise is taking place in the vicinity of Iqaluit, Nunavut and involves the simulated grounding and evacuation of a cruise ship.

With anticipated marine passenger and cargo service increasing in this region of Canada, it is important that the TSB is prepared to deploy for an investigation in this challenging environment. In addition to testing the TSB’s ability to deploy and meet the challenges of working in the North, this exercise will test, assess, and improve communications and collaboration between federal departments and territorial/local agencies for emergency response.

The TSB’s mandate is to advance transportation safety. Ensuring our investigators are ready to meet all challenges is critical, and participating in national exercises contributes to our skills-development and readiness.

The TSB is an independent agency that investigates marine, pipeline, railway and aviation transportation occurrences. Its sole aim is the advancement of transportation safety. It is not the function of the Board to assign fault or determine civil or criminal liability.
