It was one of the most awaited TV shows of the year, but the series has been unable to meet the tastes of Indian audiences
Everyone wants to experiment and showcase hatke shows. They follow the international pattern and create soaps that are different. A while ago, it was Anil Kapoor’s 24, which tried to recreate it’s international version. While a small section of the TV viewing society applauded and appreciated the venture – the TRP numbers showcased a different story altogether.
Amitabh Bachchan’s Yudh is another feature in the same line of thought. The show is progressive, intense and mind numbingly spectacular, but not for the large TV viewing audiences.
Five reasons why we think Big B’s show failed to garner TRPs:
#Timeline: The prime time for any show is ideally from 7 pm to 10 pm. This is the time when people generally get home from work. The 40-50 min show, which starts at 10:30 pm doesn’t give people the inclination to stay awake that late.
#Intensity: The buzz and anticipation of the show made many people eagerly wait for the first episode ofYudh. The promos also gave the viewers an insight in to what to expect from it. In spite of that, no one still predicted it to be that high on intensity. It is like watching a high octave movie like Raajneeti, with constant twists and turns, for an hour everyday just before bed. There’s a constant unsolved puzzle ticking in your head.
#Need for curiosity: Every Indian daily soap has a high and low moment. People watch one episode and ignore two after that, but when they come back to it – they know exactly what happened. While it may be a bad thing when it comes to international series, it works for the Indian shows. The promos of the upcoming episodes don’t incite curiosity ‘coz that’s already a constant state of mind of a person who is watching the show.
#Hypocrisy: Majority of Indian audiences watch saas-bahu sagas. They may all claim that they want something different; but the truth is that they are so accustomed to bedroom romance, kitchen politics and induction of films in daily soaps that they don’t want to see it change. The story of Yudh maybe more socially and politically relevant, but without the tadka of romance and jokes, people can’t seem to connect with it.
#Flawed TRP system: It’s not a case of sour grapes, but frankly we believe that the system is flawed. Everyone knows how TRPs are measured. Television sets of few select homes are installed with a device called People’s Meter. It measures the amount of time people watch TV, the shows they watch and the frequency. Why we say it is flawed? Well because these metric systems don’t change as per the show. The target audience of Yudh is very different from the regular daily soaps – so how can it be compared to the other shows.
Overall, we believe Amitabh Bachchan’s Yudh is class apart, it just need a few tweaks with respect to the timings and the frequency of shows. Well we hope the makers are listening. Tell us if you agree with us and let us know what you think BollywoodLifers.
