Popular lyricist and dialogue write Niranjan Iyengar is coming up with a new talk show – Look Who’s Talking on Zee Café

In a conversation with Iyengar, Shruti Haasan reveals about her life, her upbringing, her parent’s separation, career, music, love and her wedding plans. Read excerpts from the talk show…

Shruti on her upbringing

My father (Kamal Haasan) was busy while growing up but that never bothered me. Whenever he was around and the time I got to spend with him are some of the best memories of my life. My father has always been a liberated soul and has treated me like an adolescent since childhood. He had given me an advice that that has stayed with me always. He said, “You are not answerable to anyone but you. There are no rules or principles that you have to follow. As long as you are okay with your conscience, you will be okay.”

My mom (Sarika) tried to give me a very middle class upbringing. She is the one who brought discipline in my life. Also, I owe my mom for the amazing music legacy she has given me. She had an amazing collection of music and I grew up listening to bands like Pink Flyod, so my interest in music comes from her. My father on the other hand gave me the musical genes as he is a fabulous singer himself. That’s why I have been singing since six.

Shruti on her parent’s separation

I was a very intuitive child and before they told my sister Akshara and me that they were separating, I sort of had a hint. I never held any grudges against them for it. And today I feel happy to see them happy. Both are working, both have their own space in life and both are living life on their own terms. As a couple, my mom and dad were the most beautiful couple I have ever seen. There was a lot of love and warmth between them and it was wonderful to be around them at that time.

Shruti on her music and filmi career

Never thought I would be an actor because I didn’t think I was girly enough to be one. Music has always been my passion and learning Hindustani music gave a new direction and focus to my life. I am not an actress who can sing, I am a singer who can act. I am very competitive and aggressive by nature and had I not been an actor or singer, I would have definitely been a lawyer. I was going on tangents initially and didn’t know where to focus more, but I am doing six films this year and have learnt over the years how to streamline my work and where to focus. I wanted to do independent music, but that still doesn’t have scope in India. So I formed a five member band with my best friend. Music is my retirement plan. It is an important part of my future.

Shruti on love

The idea of falling in love is exciting, but the other parts require a really cool person to get me into the everyday life of it. Haven’t found anyone like me yet. I am obsessed with myself and can’t share my mirror with anybody. That’s why I don’t date actors.

Shruti on marriage

I dream about my wedding day and Ryan Gosling as a groom , but I am petrified of getting married. The idea of sharing my personal space 24/7 with someone is scary. I am not really cut out for marriage.

So don’t forget to catch this special episode of Look Who’s Talking on Zee Café on August 3, 2014.
