As part of a $106 million investment in small craft harbours across the country, the Government of Canada will provide $1.8 million to repair and maintain fishing harbours in Manitoba.
The $106 million in funding includes $66 million in regular program funding for the Small Craft Harbours Program in 2014-15 and $40 million over two years from Economic Action Plan 2014.
Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s Small Craft Harbours Program is a nationwide program mandated to keep the harbours that are critical to the fishing industry open and in good repair.
Major projects in Manitoba being funded under the program include:
Maintenance and Repair Projects
- Installation of floating timber wharves at Berens River (Sigurdsson Island);
- Refurbishment of the west timber crib wharf at Easterville;
- Replacement of floating timber wharves at Gimli;
- Replacement of the concrete approach to a timber pile wharf at Hnausa;
- Reconstruction of a timber crib wharf at Moose Lake; and
- Repairs to the rubble mound breakwater at Pine Dock (Little Bullhead Post Office).
In addition, a number of minor repair and redredging projects as well as technical studies will be carried out at small craft harbours throughout the province this year.
