Calgary Remand Centre inmate in hospital

April 30, 2013 09:02 PM

The Alberta government says that the severe beating of an inmate at Calgary’s remand centre is not connected to the wildcat strike by prison staff that began on Friday. The man was rushed to hospital on Sunday night in critical condition after the attack, and doctors expect he’ll recover. Police hope that security cameras will be able to give them a better idea of who was involved in the assault. They also hope to learn more about what caused the incident and talk to witnesses. While the government denies any connection with the strike, police say they will also look into that possibility. “Certainly it will be something we are looking at,” says Kevin Brookwell with the Calgary Police Service. “We don’t have access to a lot of the inner workings inside the remand centre. We want to determine where the inmates were, what they were doing at the time, what may have prompted this so there are a lot of questions to be answered.” The government says the strike is costing them about $1.2M per day to shift police resources to accommodate the strike.(Corutsey CTV News)
