The Government of Canada's EcoAction Community Funding Program

May 20, 2014 10:15 PM

The Government of Canada recently announced the National Conservation Plan to help conserve and restore Canada’s lands and waters and connect Canadians to their rich heritage.

This plan provides a long-term vision for conservation efforts across Canada. It will encourage on-the-ground action and partnerships leading to tangible results. It will also contribute to Canada’s long-term prosperity.

Environment Canada’s EcoAction Community Funding Program helps to advance these goals. Through EcoAction, the Government of Canada supports community-based projects that have measurable, positive impacts on the environment. Funded projects engage Canadians in their communities to take action to protect our air, climate, water and nature, today and for the future.
In 2014-2015, the EcoAction Community Funding Program will provide $4,351,753 million for new and ongoing projects. This year, 85 projects have been approved.

Applicants must ensure that at least 50 percent of the total value of their project comes from sources other than the Government of Canada. For every dollar received through EcoAction, approximately $2.45 is leveraged from other funding partners. This leveraging can take the form of either financial or in-kind resources, such as volunteer labour, products, or services. Partner funding and other support broadens the scope of projects, improve on‑the‑ground results, and strengthen public and private collaboration. More information about the EcoAction Community Funding Program is available on Environment Canada’s website, at http://www.ec.gc.ca/ecoaction.

Some of the funded activities include projects aimed at:

  • reducing greenhouse gas emissions by reducing energy consumption and taking steps to improve home energy efficiency;
  • improving water quality by reducing the amount of pesticides or household hazardous substances entering streams and lakes;
  • working to reduce air emissions that contribute to air pollution;
  • restoring and protecting natural habitat;
  • reducing biodiversity loss; and
  • building the capacity of communities to sustain these activities into the future.

The 5 projects highlighted in today’s announcement include:
