The Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, today issued a statement following the Supreme Court of Canada’s decision regarding the constitutionality of the security certificate regime, the exclusion of evidence and determination of reasonableness in the Harkat case, and the protection of the identity of CSIS sources:

“The Government of Canada has just received the Supreme Court of Canada’s decision and is pleased with the findings on the constitutionality and reasonableness of the certificate. The Government will review the decision closely.

The security certificate regime is an important element of the Government’s approach to countering terrorism and protecting national security. The Government of Canada remains committed to taking action against non-citizens who are inadmissible on serious grounds, in order to protect the safety and security of Canadians.”
