Niihau is that the seventh largest of the populated archipelago. This island has no sealed roads.

There are not any stores, no restaurants, no electricity, and no indoor plumbing. On the opposite hand, Niihau has the sole faculty in Hawaii—and maybe the sole one within the country—that depends entirely on alternative energy for its electricity.

Elizabeth Sinclair purchased Niihau in 1864 from the dominion of Hawaii and personal possession passed on to her descendants, the Robinson family.

In 1915, Sinclair's grandchild, Aubrey Robinson, closed the island to most guests with the aim of conserving its native culture and life. Even relatives of the inhabitants may visit solely by special permission.

Today, the island is mostly restricted to everybody except relatives of the island's house owners, the natives, U.S. Navy personnel, governance, and invited guests. There area unit terribly rare whirlybird tours to the islet therefore you'll wander on one in every of the beaches, however obtaining anyplace close to the locals is strictly tabu, giving it the nickname "The tabu islet."
