Santiago, Chile – Canada Revenue Agency

The Honourable Kerry-Lynne D. Findlay, P.C., Q.C., M.P., Minister of National Revenue, met today with the incoming Chilean Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Heraldo Muñoz. The two discussed the success of current economic links between Canada and Chile, as well as the importance of ongoing international cooperation and collaboration on a broad range of bilateral issues.

For more than 70 years, Canada and Chile have shared diplomatic, economic, and cultural ties. Last May, the outgoing President Sebastián Piñera was in Ottawa to sign the renewal of the Canada-Chile Strategic Partnership Framework. With emphasis on trade liberalization and support for various sectors, the two countries have opened new markets, creating new opportunities for businesses and jobs in both Canada and Chile.

While in Chile, Minister Findlay will represent the Government of Canada at the inauguration ceremony of President Michelle Bachelet in Valparaiso on March 11, 2014.

• Canada has a long-standing relationship with Chile. The Convention between Canada and the Republic of Chile was signed on January 21, 1998, and both countries cooperate in areas of international taxation, double taxation, transfer pricing, and exchange of information.
• The Canada-Chile Free Trade Agreement (CCFTA) is the cornerstone of Canada’s strong and growing trade and investment relationship with Chile. Since it came into force in 1997, two-way merchandise trade has more than tripled and Canada has become the largest source of new direct investment in Chile. Efforts to modernize and broaden the CCFTA are ongoing.
• Canada and Chile share strong academic connections with students enjoying frequent and regular exchanges between both countries. There are more than 120 agreements between Canadian and Chilean universities, colleges, and technical institutes.
• Through our Strategy for Engagement in the Americas, Canada is working with partners towards three goals: to increase mutual economic opportunity; to address insecurity and advance freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law; and to foster lasting relationships.
