SYNOPSIS:
‘Gunday’ is set in 1973 when Bangladesh was being formed. Bikram (Ranveer Singh) and Bala (Arjun Kapoor) were children at that time and from their childhood itself they started selling arms for their living and worked under a goon called Latif. When Bikram and Bala are kids, one army officer tries to physically abuse Bikram, but Bala shoots that army officer to protect Bikram. After killing the officer, both of them migrate from Bangladesh to Kolkata (then Calcutta) and start stealing coal from railway’s goods wagon and sell it. By the time they grow up they become the king of all illegal business in Kolkata. Satyajeet Sarkar (Irrfan Khan) is appointed as the new ACP of Kolkata and he warns Bikram and Bala to stop doing all the illegal things. On the other side, both of them fall in love with a cabaret dancer Nandita (Priyanka Chopra) and she asks them to impress her, then only she will decide who her beloved is. Before they prove their love to Nandita, Bala kills someone and Bikram asks him to leave Kolkata, until the situation gets normal because ACP Satyajeet has given a warrant to shoot Bala, if they found him in the city. Bala leaves Kolkata and asks Bikram to promise him of not getting closer to Nandita, until he comes back because still Nandita had not chosen any of them. What’s next? Does Bikram fulfill his promise? Who will Nandita chose Bikram or Bala? This is the rest of the story.

STORY, SCREENPLAY AND DIALOGUES:
Story written by Ali Abbas Zafar is not very fresh as we have seen several movies in the past which were based on the friendship and later differences between them created by police by planting their own people. But, must say the backdrop of the story which has coal theft is very fresh and enjoyable. Screenplay written by Ali Abbas Zafar is routine and simple but the good thing is, it doesn’t confuse the audience at all...you need not to use your brain why it's happening or how it's happening. All the characters are well developed and leave strong impact, but the pre climax scenes looks very funny and don’t hold the audience's interest level. Also climax is much stretched and audience waits for the movie to get over. They should have edited it. Dialogues are fine and at few places audience claps, specially while punch lines delivered by Ranveer Singh.

PERFORMANCES:
When it comes to performance we would praise all the actors equally, be it Arjun or Ranveer or Irfan or Priyanka, all of them have performed wonderfully. Arjun Kapoor looks little awkward in comic sequences, otherwise he is good as his character is unidirectional. The way he carries his character he reminds of Sanjay Dutt. We must say here that Ranveer Singh is the real show stealer because he has shown multiple shades in his roles and now it’s proved that it won't be difficult for him to do a solo hero movie. He is capable of pulling of a film. Saurabh Shukla, Raj Singh Raana lends a good support in their small roles.

DIRECTION, CINEMATOGRAPHY AND EDITING:
Director Ali Abbas Zafar has done a good job up to a certain extent, but we can't say that his direction is first rate. He has taken wonderful job from all the artistes and it’s his achievement as a director. Cinematographer Aseem Mishra has done a marvelous job, be its train sequences or mine sequences he has captured all beautifully. Editing by Rameshwar Bhagat is Good.
|
ACTION, BACKGROUND SCORE AND MUSIC:
Action by Shyam Kaushal is excellent specially the train sequences. Musically Sohail Sen has given a very good album, and songs like ‘Jashn-E-Ishqa’ ‘Tune Maari Entriyaan’ and ‘Jiya’ is already topping the chart list and very popular among the listeners.

CHOREOGRAPHY, LOCATIONS AND PRODUCTION VALUE:
Choreography by Bosco -Ceaar is first class; they have made Arjun kapoor also dance well, who is a non dancer.
|
OUR VERDICT:
Overall it’s a good entertainer and you won't be disappointed if you watch it. Recommended.
