Ekk Nayi Pehchaan: What is Sharda learning – English or personality development?

February 12, 2014 10:45 AM

The homemaker has finally stepped out of her comfort zone to be more than just a wife and mother.

Ekk Nayi Pehchaan is a story that revolves around Sharda (Poonam Dhillon), an illiterate housewife who sacrifices her happiness for the sake of her family. Her family ridicules her for not knowing English language; all except her daughter-in-law Sakshi (Krystle D’Souza).

Sakshi enrolls her mother-in-law for English coaching classes and makes sure that she motivates her at every step. So far, we are in agreement with the show, their storyline and how it’s progressing. But the recent episode really confused us.

Sharda’s professor asks her to write an essay on herself and make a speech in the class. After much deliberation, she successfully writes it and after beginning hesitantly, goes on to talk non-stop about who she is and what she does that makes her life – her family, chores, hobbies et al. But here’s the interesting part, everything is in Hindi accept for ‘myself Sharda Modi'.

Well we are certainly confused – is this an English coaching class or some personality development course? ‘Coz instead of being trained in English, she is being trained to talk in front of a crowd and being coached to identify herself, her likes, her dislikes and more.

Shouldn’t Sharda try to make a speech in English, no matter how broken it is? Isn’t that the idea behind going for such a class, no BollywoodLifers?
