LUCKNOW:
Exactly six years after Congressvice-president stayed in the house of Sunita Koriin Amethi and used her name to woo Dalits but forgot later, she would get a roof over her house on Sunday.
Aam Aadmi Party volunteers have put an asbestos sheet over the two-room house. The work is almost complete and the house will be ready for use on Sunday, also the Republic Day. On the occasion, the AAP workers will also hoist tricolour outside her house to remind that "politicians that people are real masters in a republic".
AAP leader Kumar Vishwas, who has decided to challenge Rahul in Amethi, had visited Sunita's house on January 12. The poet-turned-politician was shocked to see that the family was still leading a miserable life in a kuchcha house with no roof in the bitter cold. He had then assured the woman that AAP workers would at least arrange a roof for the house. AAP workers contributed from their pocket and have put an asbestos roof. They, however, refused to divulge the cost, saying it was just few hundred.
"There are many Sunitas in Amethi and other parts of the country. We don't have means to help all of them, that's why we are working to change the system and give power to the people so that they don't have to beg before politicians," said Vishwas. AAP leader said Congress claims to have spent over Rs 55,000 crore on Amethi's development are not visible.
Sunita thanked AAP workers and said that she was happy that Vishwas has fulfilled his promised.
Rahul had visited Sunita's two room house on January 26, 2008, dined spent a night and assured to redress her problems. In fact, in 2008, Rahul visited several dalit families in UP to build a campaign against the then Mayawati government. He used Sunita's name in several public meetings to describe the status of poor and Dalits. It helped the Congress to raise its UP tally in 2009 Lok Sabha elections. But, in 2012 assembly elections, the party could win only one out of five seats in Amethi.
The roof of the two room kuchcha house caved in March 2012 after it was set afire allegedly by some miscreants owing allegiance to the Samajwadi Party. SP leaders had then visited Sunita and promised help but nothing happened. Since then she along with her four children and husband was living in one room covered with tarpaulin sheet. She had then also sought help from Congress leaders and met Rahul but he could not recognize her. On reminding that he stayed at her house, Rahul asked a worker to help me but nothing was done, she said.
