January 17, 2014 10:10 AM

Toronto -

On behalf of the Honorable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Health, Eve Adams, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health, was joined by Canadian Chef Christine Cushing today to demonstrate how to make one of the new recipes from the Government of Canada's Eat Well campaign.

Parliamentary Secretary Eve Adams and Chef Christine Cushing led a cooking session with representatives from the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. The Speedy Flatbread Pizza that they prepared is one of 12 family-friendly recipes now posted on both the Healthy Canadians and the Heart and Stroke Foundation's websites.

The Government is committed to providing information to Canadians that will help them make healthy food choices. As part of the Eat Well campaign, twelve recipes developed especially for Canadian families by a Canadian Heart and Stroke dietitian were released today.

The cooking demonstration was held at the Forest Hill Loblaw's cooking school, in Toronto, Ontario. Loblaw is a member of the Retail Council of Canada (RCC), a collaborator in the campaign. RCC participating members, including Sobeys, Metro, Costco, Walmart, Federated Co-operatives, Co-op Atlantic and Safeway, are all promoting healthy eating and food skills through such activities as in-store signage, hand-outs, nutritionist-led events, and Facebook and Twitter messages.

Quick Facts

  • More than 1.2 million Canadians conduct online searches for healthy recipes each month.
  • In total, 48 recipes will be released over the next year as part of the campaign - 12 each season.
  • Recipes will include vegetarian, fish and meat options, and will be child-friendly, so that children can make healthy meals with their parents.
