Charlottetown residents will soon benefit from a much needed additional municipal drinking water supply, thanks to joint federal and provincial funding announced today by the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans and Member of Parliament for Egmont, the Honourable Gail Shea; Prince Edward Island Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Minister, Robert Vessey; and Charlottetown Mayor, Clifford Lee. The funding will support the construction of the main control building for the site and the installation of well field piping between the wellhead and the building.

"Our top priority is jobs, growth and long-term prosperity. We are proud to support projects that will enhance the lives of Prince Edward Islanders for years to come," said Minister Shea. "Our communities have unique and diverse infrastructure needs and our government is pleased to deliver infrastructure programs that will provide funding for projects that are chosen and prioritized according to the infrastructure needs of each community."

"The Government of Prince Edward Island is pleased to make this investment of $355,253 in this phase of Charlottetown's new water supply," said Minister Vessey. "This has been a longstanding priority for residents and we are happy to help make it a reality by contributing to the well fields and a new main control building."

"We are pleased to see the Miltonvale Wellfield project move forward with funding for phase two of three," said Mayor Clifford Lee. "The construction of the control building and piping from the wellhead to the control building is an important step in providing increased service reliability and additional distribution capacity for Charlottetown's water supply."

The governments of Canada and Prince Edward Island will each invest up to $355,253 in this project with the City of Charlottetown contributing the remaining $593,320 of the total project cost of $1,303,826. Federal funding for this project comes from the Communities Component of the Building Canada Fund.

The Building Canada Fund — Communities Component recognizes the unique infrastructure needs of Canada's smaller communities and focuses on projects that meet environmental, economic and quality of life objectives.

Canada's Economic Action Plan 2013 is delivering $70 billion for public infrastructure, including a $53 billion New Building Canada Plan to build roads, bridges, subways, commuter rail, and other public infrastructure in cooperation with provinces, territories, and municipalities. Thanks to the Government of Canada's leadership and our strong economic and financial fundamentals, the Canadian economy has recovered from the global recession better than most other industrialized countries. Canada has been a leader among G-7 countries throughout the recovery with more than 1 million net new jobs created since July 2009. The New Building Canada Plan, combined with other federal infrastructure investments, will support Canada's infrastructure advantage, a key enabler of economic growth and job creation.
