Governor General to Host Round-Table Discussionon Youth Engagement

Ottawa–

His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, will host a one-day round-table discussion on youth engagement with 75 youth from the National Capital Region, onWednesday, January 15, 2014, at Rideau Hall.

At 9:30 a.m., His Excellency will deliver opening remarks about the importance of building a smarter, more caring nation and how youth can take a more active role in their communities. Organized in partnership with United Way Ottawa, the discussion will focus on defining meaningful youth involvement, identifying challenges faced by youth and how to address them, and finding new, innovative ways and opportunities to help them achieve their goals.

Other guest speakers will include Michael Allen, President and CEO of United Way Ottawa, and Mathieu Fleury, Ottawa City councillor. At 2:30 p.m., the Governor General will hear the participants’ views and ideas on the themes of the discussion.

During the last year, round-table discussions on youth engagement have been hosted by the Governor General across the country. This latest edition comes following the launch of My Giving Moment, a national multimedia campaign designed to encourage Canadians to think about what they have to give and then act upon those opportunities. The campaign, inspired by His Excellency, is part of an ongoing effort to promote giving among Canadians and to build a smarter, more caring nation.
