The parents of a baby girl who was dumped in the garbage of a Delhi hospital say they would have lost the body for good had they reached there a little late.

The Delhi government has ordered an inquiry against Mata Chanan Devi Hospital following the blunder Monday.

The distraught parents, Rajesh Kumar and Neetu, told IANS that a truck meant to transport medical waste would have carried away the body as unclaimed body had they been delayed.

Police have registered a case on the complaint of the parents.

Kumar, a trader, said he took his pregnant wife to a nursing home Sunday morning. She gave birth to a girl.

"The baby was initially fine," he said. "In the evening, the baby's head started to swell and the doctors referred her to Mata Chanan Devi Hospital where we paid Rs.34,000 for treatment," he said.

Late at night, doctors informed them that the child had expired.

"The hospital told us to take the body but we were not in a condition to do that. We paid Rs.1,500 to the hospital so that the body could be kept overnight in the mortuary," he said.

On Monday morning, when the family reached the hospital, a supervisor could not find the body.

"Suddenly, a man loading medical waste onto a truck discovered the corpse behind a yellow bag in the truck," Kumar said.

That is when a fuming Kumar decided to summon the police.
