Two people who posed as traffic policemen in Delhi have been arrested for illegally checking commercial vehicles and demanding bribes from drivers after threatening to impound their vehicles, police said Thursday.

Ramesh Chand, 35, and Raj Kumar, 42, were arrested around 1 a.m. Thursday from Shakarpur in east Delhi when a Delhi Police constable found them illegally checking a commercial vehicle.

"These men - wearing blue jackets, blue trousers and black shoes to pose as traffic policemen - were illegally checking vehicles at Shakarpur underpass on the road from Akshardham temple towards Geeta Colony," said Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Anil Shukla.

The accused tried to flee after seeing Delhi Police constable Sohanvir.

"Sohanvir managed to apprehend both the accused with the help of Suresh, the driver whose vehicle was being checked by the accused at that time," Shukla said.

The driver told police that the accused stopped his vehicle and demanded Rs.200 as bribe.
