Delhi Metro swooshes into 12th year of operation

The Delhi Metro which made its first run in the national capital Dec 24, 2002, Tuesday completed 11 years of operation.

"We started with a network of 8.5 km and six stations, between Shahdara and Tis Hazari, which was inaugurated by the prime minister. We had six trains, of which four were operational, and covered 775 km-run on the first day," said Anuj Dayal, DMRC executive director for corporate communications.

Since then, Dayal said, Metro trains in Delhi cover a distance of 70,000 km daily, carrying over 23 lakh passengers on a daily basis.

"We carried one lakh passengers in December 2002, and recently Aug 8, we carried 25 lakh passengers. On Aug 19, we carried 26 lakh passengers. These are our milestones, and we are very proud of them" he said.

Dayal also listed many activities by the DMRC, including reservation of the first coach of the Metro for women in October 2012.
