Top seeds win at ITF Women's Championships

Second seeded Diana Marcinkevica of Latvia and third seeded Gioia Barbieri of Italy scored contrasting wins to enter the singles second round at the $25,000 Ganesh Naik ITF Women’s Tennis Championships being played at the Ganesh Naik Tennis Complex here Monday.

In the opening round, the World No.229 Latvian gave a 6-1, 6-4 lesson to young wildcard Vasanti Shinde in a one hour and 15 minute tussle while Gioia led 7-5, 2-6, 2-0 before Serbian Tamara Curvoic retired due to exhaustion.

Thai girl Plipuech Peangtam outplayed Russian Anna Morgina 6-0, 6-0 in just 48 minutes to also move into the next round.

In the doubles first round, second seeds Ksenia Palkina of Krgysztan and Jade Windley of Britain combined well to oust Indian wildcard entrants Rutuja Bhosale and Rishika Sunkara 6-2, 6-4 to make it to the last eight.

Doubles: Ksenia Palkina (KGZ)/Jade Windley (GBR) bt Rutuja Bhosale/Rishika Sunkar (IND) 6-2, 6-4; Anna Smith/Jocelyn Rae (GBR) bt Keren Shlomo (ISR)/Nundnadda Wannasuk(THA) 6-1, 6-1; Eraydin Basak/Melis Sezer (TUR) bt Kamila Kerimbayeva (KAZ)/Anna Shkudun (UKR) 6-4, 4-6, 10-4.
