Jakarta, Dec 9 (IANS)

At least six people were killed and 59 wounded Monday after a train ploughed into an oil truck in the Indonesian capital Jakarta, police said.

The accident took place in the morning when the truck was crossing a railway gate that should have been closed because the train would be passing, Brigadier Tieter Wahyanto, police officer in-charge at the national traffic management centre, told Xinhua.

"The gate did not close perfectly, hence the truck crossed the railway, and then it was hit by the passenger train," he added.

The injured have been rushed to several nearby hospitals for treatment.

Many of them are believed to be the train passengers as there were only two people in the truck, a driver and an assistant.

An investigation into the accident has begun, the officer said.
