51 killed, 191 injured Iraq attacks

A staggering 51 people were killed and 191 wounded Sunday in deadly attacks witnessed across Iraq.

Five people were killed and 18 injured when a car bomb exploded in the evening in Baghdad's Aalam neighbourhood, a police source told Xinhua, adding three people were killed and 16 wounded in a car bomb blast in a market in Jamela area, while one person was killed and five injured in car bombing in Talbiya area.

As many as 38 people were killed and 146 wounded in a wave of 13 bombings in Baghdad's Shiite districts earlier in the day.

In Diyala province, a civilian was killed and six were wounded in an explosion in a town, about 65 km from Baghdad.

Near provincial capital Baquba, some gunmen shot dead Ahmed al-Khafaji, head of the provincial media office for the leading Shiite party, a police source said. In separate incidents, two more people were killed near Baquba.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the deadly attacks.

According to the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq, 8,109 were killed between January and November 2013.
