Bahamas Association of Athletics Associations (BAAA) president Mike Sands has been suspended.

The BAAA executive board members this week voted to suspend Sands for 30 days, reports CMC.

“Within seven days after serving his suspension, Sands is at liberty to appear before the executive board and show cause as to why his suspension should not be extended to expulsion. Should he fail to appear before the executive board, the board will make a final determination in his absence,” according to a statement from the BAAA.

However, Sands has sought to clarify the on-going impasse since the BAAA elections of November 2012.

“The members voted to remove Iram Lewis (VP) Carl Oliver and Harrison Petty. The vote of the members was not accepted, and a selected number of executives were taken to court for a judicial review. The court ruled 'lack of jurisdiction' but the trio were not satisfied. They filed to the courts again. The members voted to have a vote of no confidence in the entire executive board. Oliver indicated that he would not send out the notice to members,” he stated.

“In the meantime, certain executives who did not find it necessary to attend meetings (both executives and general) duly called by the president have proceeded in holding meetings called by the general secretary, and his supporters and pretend to set the agenda for the federation.

The Bahamas is scheduled to host the inaugural IAAF World Relays, May 24-25, 2014.
