Nobody feels safe in Gujarat: Congress

October 19, 2013 09:38 PM

New Delhi, Oct 19 (IANS) Hitting out at Bharatiya Janata Party's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, Congress spokesperson Renuka Chowdhary Saturday said "nobody" felt safe in Gujarat.

"Nobody feels safe in Gujarat ... that is why tourists don't go to Gujarat," Chowdhary said Saturday.

The comment came as Modi, in his Saturday's Kanpur rally speech, slammed the law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh and said people felt safe in Gujarat.

Modi said: "When a Uttar Pradesh youngster travels by train in Uttar Pradesh, his parents keep calling him to enquire about his security and safety. The son keeps assuaging their fears. When the son says the train has entered Gujarat, his mother finally sleeps in peace."

Chowdhary, referring to the 2002 Gujarat riots, said, "Ask people of Godhra how safe they feel."

Asked about Modi's popularity, she said: "Jab sheher me circus aata hai, taliya bajti hai" (when circus comes to the city, people clap).
