The zoo's annual stocktake requires keepers to check on the numbers of every one of more than 800 unique species, including every invertebrate, bird, fish, mammal, reptile, and amphibian. The compulsory count is required as part of ZSL London Zoo's zoo license and the results are logged into the International Species Information System (ISIS), where the data is shared with zoos around the world and used to manage the international breeding programmes for endangered animals.
